Historic House in Barnegat Struck During Traffic Accident

Jul 24, 2019

A driver faces numerous charges following a July 20 traffic accident on Route 9 in Barnegat Township. Police Lt. Jeff Ryan said that at 10:30 a.m., Chun Chen of Barnegat was driving a silver Toyota Camry on Route 9 South near the West Bay Avenue intersection when the rear passenger tire on Chen’s car blew out. It caused his car to leave the roadway, striking a curb, fence and bush.

Ryan said Chen’s vehicle backed up and then struck a 2018 black Porsche Macan driven by George Denardo, which was stopped in traffic. Chen’s vehicle then backed into the front yard of the historic Cox House at 353 North Main St. (Route 9) and impacted the front porch of the county-owned landmark. Ryan said Chen’s vehicle then pulled forward back into the lane of travel and struck the rear of a 2010 red Ford F150 driven by John Wilusz of South Amboy.

He said Chen’s car then backed up again, striking a street sign, and lastly pulled forward and left the scene of the accident until coming to finally rest in front of 335 South Main St. due to mechanical failure.

Chen was issued motor vehicle summonses for leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and careless driving. E.E.
