Barnegat — Hearts of Mercy, a Barnegat Township group that reaches out to individuals and families in need, is seeking volunteers to work with children on Wednesday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 at the Main Street Alliance Church in Manahawkin. Kristin Santorelli, who founded Hearts of Mercy with her husband, Mark, said volunteers needed include tutors, mentors, reading buddies and van drivers.

“It’s a good opportunity to help children with their homework,” she said.

Currently, the group is serving 15 children, with each adult volunteer working with two youngsters in grades K-6. She said they also help the children to improve social skills and build confidence.

“We want to do what we can to help these children succeed,” said Santorelli. “Each youngster gets individual attention.”

She said if more volunteers sign up, the group could expand to other days of the week. Anyone interested should call Linda Scott at 609-661-0514 or Mike Mercadante at 609-290-6513. E.E.
