Facts Matter

Nov 13, 2019

To the Editor:

I have been reading the pro-Trump and anti-Trump letters until I can no longer stand it. Facts matter. They really do. I am not a Trump hater, and I do not care that Trump curses in public. Don’t we all? What I care about are facts, promises and results. Only Trump is responsible for his behavior, not Obama, not Hillary, not Hunter Biden, not Pelosi and no one else. Attempts to deflect Trump’s behavior to other people are a non sequitur.

Here are the facts. Trump made the following promises that have not been kept:

Mexico will pay for a wall – nope.

He will repeal and replace Obamacare with something better and cheaper – nope. Even though his party held the majority for two years, there was not even a proposal for a new healthcare plan.

More people will be insured – nope. Tens of thousands have lost healthcare because of executive orders.

All pre-existing conditions coverage will be kept – the Republican administration is pursing several lawsuits to eliminate coverage for pre-existing conditions.

The middle class will get tax breaks – not if you live in New Jersey. Those of us with two houses in New Jersey (lots of people), with tens of thousands of dollars in real estate taxes, are now limited to a $10,000 deduction, which increases our taxes – although billionaires got a tax break.

He will pull out of all foreign wars – nope. He pulled out of Syria, only to put those troops in Iraq, put thousands of troops in Saudi Arabia and keep all troops in Afghanistan.

Only the best people will be involved in his government – absolutely not. There have been convictions, indictments, cabinet members resigning in disgrace (like Zinke); his appointment of generals whom he called the best, only to call them the worst after several months.

He will bring back the coal industry – nope.

He will bring back manufacturing jobs – the two that he touted as staying in the Midwest have since left; a few have relocated from overseas (Texas, Pennsylvania), but the Labor Department says manufacturing jobs are down.

Trump’s recurring lie is that the Russians did not interfere in the 2016 election to help him win. His own appointed intelligence agencies unanimously say the Russians did this. Republican Sen. Richard Burr, and member of the Select Committee on intelligence, said Russia did this, and Trump’s appointed Justice Department special counsel said Russia did this. But all these lies certainly say a lot about his current promises.

I don’t hate the guy. But he has lied so many times, about so many things, why should anyone believe him about anything, or trust his ability to get things done?

That also leaves the theory about the “deep state.” If there is a deep state, why hasn’t Trump, Bill Barr’s Department of Justice or all the hundreds of Republican administration appointees uncovered this? Is Trump not concerned with ferreting these people out? No one has presented any evidence of any kind to support a deep state. I call on the Republicans to investigate this immediately. I don’t know why they haven’t already.

I would love to know the facts. The facts matter.
