Explorer Post Looking to Attract Future Aviators

By Eric Englund | Sep 18, 2019

West Creek — An Aviation Explorer Post is forming in Ocean County to attract youngsters who may be interested in an aviation career. The group is open to those between the ages of 11 and 20 and adults who are interested in aviation.

Open houses will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 and Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Eagle’s Nest Airport in West Creek. Event coordinator Kurt Stofko said the post would feature a “ground school” where students would learn all about aviation without taking to the skies.

“Post members would arrange for their own flight instruction,” said Stofko. “We’re not able to do that as an Explorer Post. But we’ll have pilots, mechanics and other personnel to give them a complete overview.”

Stofko said that during the open house, there will be a Young Eagles flight rally sponsored by Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 898. Association members will give free airplane rides to youth between the ages of 8 and 17 to introduce them to the world of aviation.

Also in conjunction with the Oct. 5 event, the Garden State Angels, Women in Aviation group will sponsor Girls in Aviation Day. They will have a table with information and activities for young women related to aviation.
