Barnegat Leader Spring Sports Previews

Experience Turns Barnegat Boys Volleyball Around

Apr 19, 2019

If Ed Peters, the 13-year head coach of the Barnegat High School boys volleyball team, continues to prove prescient, his squad may have quite the 2019 season. Before the season started, Peters said, “We want to show improvement as the season progresses and challenge for the A Central Division title. We also have the goals of qualifying for the state tournament and the Shore Conference Tournament.”

Well, so far he can check off his first goal because his team has definitely improved as the season has progressed.

It didn’t start off well, with a 1-2 loss to Donovan Catholic and a 0-2 shutout against St. John Vianney. Then again, Peters had predicted those two teams, along with Red Bank Catholic, would be the cream of the Shore Conference Central Division.

Since then, the Bengals have been on a roll. They beat Lacey, Long Branch, Pleasantville and Toms River East in straight sets and defeated Keyport, 2-1, upping their record to a respectable 5-2. Not bad at all for a team that lost its first seven matches in 2018!

In fact, Barnegat improved greatly as the 2018 season progressed, ending up 7-13, which means after that horrible start the team went 7-6 in the later part of the campaign. And even 7-13 was a step up from 2017, when Barnegat went 3-19.

So it isn’t surprising Peters went into this season feeling pretty good about his current crew of athletes.

“We have several experienced players from last year’s team,” said Peters, “who we feel should have outstanding seasons for us.”

Those players include senior outside hitter Parth Patel, senior setter Bobby Perrini, junior libero Marcuz Sadsad, sophomore middle/setter Ken Franke, junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Aaron Osborn, senior middle Jeff Rawley, senior defensive specialist Dom Urso, junior outside hitter Shane Savastano, senior defensive specialist Franco Mazzeo (who also serves, literally, as serve specialist), senior defensive specialists Justin Montanez and David Ciani, junior outside hitter Zach Fransckiewich, senior defensive specialist Anthony Irizarry, and senior outside hitter Sal Fiorello.

The roster is filled out by Joe Arocho, sophomore outside hitter; Ryan Buckley, freshman defensive specialist; Charlie Carrodus, junior outside hitter; Ricky Enalls, freshman outside hitter; Nick Faraldi, sophomore outside hitter; Lane Isenberg, sophomore middle; Kaden Jason, junior defensive specialist; Joshua Javines, freshman outside hitter; Declan Lustenberger, freshman outside hitter; Hudson Morici, freshman setter; Zach Oliver, junior defensive specialist; John Pannone, senior outside hitter; Paven Patel, freshman outside/setter; Raymond Ramos, senior defensive specialist; Karim Robles-Mendoza, senior defensive specialist; Jayson Schleicher, sophomore defensive specialist; Jeremiah Simmons, sophomore defensive specialist; and Justin Sullivan, freshman outside hitter. —R.M.
