A former restaurant owner in North Jersey is trying to make a name for himself locally with the recent opening of the East Bay Italian Grille at 696 East Bay Ave. in Barnegat. It will be operating at the location that previously housed Gemelli Bistro and Pizzeria, which had taken over Serpico’s Ristorante.

“I grew up in the restaurant business,” said owner Matthew Vernieri. “My father owned and ran restaurants for around 50 years, and I had some of my own places, too.”

Vernieri, who moved to Barnegat 10 years ago, most recently owned Bay View Terrace at the Waretown Key Harbor Marina.

“But when I saw that this place (Gemelli) was available, I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to own an establishment in Barnegat,” said Vernieri. “I really like this community and want to be a part of it.”

Vernieri said the new establishment features “many traditional Italian favorites and house specials.” He said menu highlights include Lasagna Bolognese, Gnocchi Sorrento, Rigatoni with Broccoli Rabe and Sausage, Pork Chop Calabrese, Short Ribs Italiano, Osso Buco, Salmon Provinciale and Zuppa di Pesce.

There is also a variety of appetizers, desserts, antipasti, salads and wood stone oven pizza. In addition, the lunch menu will feature signature burgers and panini sandwiches.

Vernieri said the restaurant is available for private parties.

“The main dining area can seat around 90 people,” he said. “It’ll be great for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special events.”

Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, call East Bay Italian Grille at 609-994-2353. —E.E.
