Barnegat — The Lillian M. Dunfee Elementary School in Barnegat Township encourages good behavior through its ROAR (Respectful Optimistic Achievers Responsible) program. This year’s theme is Surfing to Success, which was highlighted by a parade on Sept. 27.

“Kids and staff wore Hawaiian shirts and tropical attire,” said event coordinator Michelle Cucinotta, guidance director.

She said aside from Dunfee students, teachers and administrators, the parade included the Barnegat High School marching band, school board and township committee members, Barnegat High School cheerleaders, high school JROTC and fire company members.

“Our school mascot, Drake the Dragon, paraded to promote a positive school and community partnership,” said Cucinotta.

“New to this year’s parade were our Pre-K students,” said Principal John Fiorentino. “We have four new Pre-K classrooms this year. The surfing theme will go on throughout the year. Some teachers have surfboards in their classrooms.”

The program was implemented by then-principal Katherine Makela in 2012. A year later, it received a “Best Practice Award” by the United Nations Committee on Teaching.

“It supports positive behavior in schools and emphasizes character education,” said Cucinotta. “Students could be recognized for a simple act of kindness, from opening a door for a person to helping another student with his or her work.”  —E.E.
