The Beachcomber Fall Festival Guide

Drive-in Movie, Fall Festival Planned Next Month

Sep 27, 2019

Barnegat — A form of entertainment that has fallen by the wayside is the drive-in movie. But the Barnegat Township Recreation Department is bringing it back free of charge for a night on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. at the township dock.

The feature film is “Hocus Pocus,” a 1993 comedy horror fantasy directed by Kenny Ortega, and starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker. The movie follows the villainous trio of witches who are inadvertently resurrected by a male teenager in Salem, Mass.

Jean Broadbent, township recreation director, said you won’t have to worry about fitting that speaker on the driver’s-side door.

“You’ll be instructed to tune in to the sound on your FM dial,” she said.

Also unlike old drive-in movies, there won’t be a snack bar.

“You can bring your own snacks and soft drink,” she said. “But it is also a good opportunity to support our businesses in town. Maybe people would want to buy a pizza or some other food from our restaurants. There will be an ice cream truck available.”

The fun continues on Sunday, Oct. 20, with a fall festival and pumpkin patch from 1 to 4 p.m. at the field across from the firehouse on Birdsall Street.

Events include a costume contest, free games, inflatables, and craft and food vendors.

For more information, call the recreation department at 609-698-0080, extension 122. E.E.
