While visiting Barnegat Township to attend the recent Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony last month, 3rd District Congressman Andy Kim included a stop at the volunteer fire company and first aid squad headquarters on Birdsall Street. Fire Chief Bob Lilley said Kim wanted to make himself available “to help in any way he can” and spent about 10 minutes chatting with the group.

“He’s trying to learn more about the communities he serves,” said Lilley. “He asked us about what we do, about our trucks and equipment and our plans for the future.”

Steve Cosmanic, first aid squad first lieutenant, said Kim talked with him and other squad leaders including Treasurer James Goldstein, Capt. Robert Liccione and 2nd Lt. Elizabeth Hugg.

“We discussed the opioid crisis, and the importance of having Narcan,” he said. “We’ve had plenty of calls because of people abusing opioids.”

Cosmanic said the congressman told them he was looking at legislation involving opioids on the national level.

“We’re glad he took time to see us while in Barnegat,” said Cosmanic. “He was very down to earth.”

Following the visit, Kim released a statement where he said local firefighters and first aid squad members “are pillars of our community.”

“The work they do every day makes sure that our families can have the peace of mind they deserve,” he said. “I want to thank all our first responders for their service.”

Kim, a Democrat, who defeated Republican incumbent Tom MacArthur last November, will return to town on Saturday, April 27, at 4:30 p.m. for a town meeting at the American Legion Post. E.E.
