Civil War Encampment to Set Up in Barnegat

By Eric Englund | Oct 18, 2019

Barnegat — Civil War life comes to Barnegat Township when the 2nd New Jersey Brigade sets up an encampment at 653 East Bay Ave. on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2 and 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations to the Barnegat Township Historical Society and the 2nd Brigade will be accepted.

The “living history” event is held at the home of coordinator Michael Milling, a member of both the society and the brigade. As in past years, the encampment will feature representatives of the cavalry, infantry and civilians.

“They will give demonstrations on Civil War life, activities and duties,” Milling said. “We’re going to make the Civil War experience as real as possible.”

New to this year’s event will be historians representing soldiers from the American Revolution and World War II. There will also be a tour of Milling’s home, which he said is a pre-Civil War colonial built in 1836.

Formed more than 30 years ago, the brigade is a nonprofit group of volunteers dedicated to commemorating the Civil War through educational living-history programs.
