Circle of Life at the Shore Approaches Prime Time

By WENDY McCLURE | Apr 03, 2019

It’s spring, and the weather gods have been kind in giving us a nice taste of warmer weather. It’s funny how things have a cyclical nature, especially nature. I mean, we all know it, but do we really pay attention to it?

After a not-so-torturous winter, it’s the time we Jersey Shories love: spring. It’s the season of renewal. The flowers are popping up, you can hear more birds singing in the morning and, for me personally, the sun is moving more in line with my house to give me the ultimate light exposure. Bring on the sunscreen!

The most exciting thing I saw this week was a regular boater (Waterfox) motoring past my house on his way to the open bay for what I assume is a day of fishing. I don’t know him, but I feel like I do since I see him every morning and afternoon from March until November. This guy is doing it right! (I do wish, however, he would slow down in the no-wake zone.) I sent my husband a very excited text stating that “Waterfox” just went by. He responded with: “It’s summer!”

Spring, as we know, isn’t always as enjoyable as it can be for those who live inland. The water that we love so much can keep us a bit cooler than everyone else. We make up for it in the fall, but now it can be a real drag. We just have to make the best of it, knowing soon we will all be complaining about how hot it is.

I am so starved for sun time, though. I sat on my dock yesterday with a book, dressed in my winter coat and knit cap. Yep, it was a little cold, but the feel of the sun on my face was glorious.

Once Memorial Day hits we are in the thick of it. Now, it’s our time. We have long days to look forward to spent lying on the beach, romping around in the boat, lazing around on the dock, enjoying some snacks and adult beverages. Hopefully, the flowers will be in full bloom and the tomatoes will be well on their way to growing and ripening.

The long, lazy days of summer await us. It’s an exciting time of year. So much to look forward to! Lots of company is expected and I personally will be a cleaning maniac and stocking up on all kinds of delicious food to entice my anticipated guests. Drinking needs sustenance! Oh yes, adult beverages abound.

As summer winds down we don’t despair. That means local summer is coming and we all know the fall is the time when the Jersey Shore is at its best. The warm weather remains a little longer for us, the crowds dwindle and it’s time to get our community back.

But that is a conversation for another time. It’s all just part of the circle of life at the shore. For now, though, let’s celebrate spring. It’s just the beginning and I’m so excited. No, I just cannot hide it. Bring on the summer; there is so much to look forward to. The future is so bright I think I need to wear shades!
