Long Beach Township — The heat and humidity of Sept. 15 took their toll on the competitors in the Long Beach Island Triathlon, resulting in slightly slower times than in previous years. Nonetheless, a man who is no stranger to the Island’s elements reigned victorious. Chris Hemmerle, a Conshohocken, Pa., resident who often visits Ship Bottom during the year, completed the course – a quarter-mile swim, 10-mile bike and 3-mile run – in Long Beach Township and ended up crossing the finish line inside Bayview Park with a time of 55 minutes, 9 seconds, well ahead of second-place triathlete Kevin Trinchere of Philadelphia, who finished in 55:38, and Ryan Stulb of Holmes, Pa., who came in at 55:41.

The 34-year-old Hemmerle exited the bay following the swim in 5:38, cruised through the cycling portion of the race in 28:35 and finished with a run of 19:22 to lead the 253-competitor field. Trinchere finished the swim in 6:31, blazed through the bike in 27:56 and concluded with a 19:20 run. Ramsey’s Chris Johns completed the course in 57:08 to place fourth overall, while Scott Ball of New York City finished in 57:40 to place fifth.

Nicole O’Grosso of Hoboken finished as the first female across the finish line, completing the three phases in 59:20, good enough for seventh overall, while Matawan’s Christie Patla finished the race 24th overall with a time of 1:04:13.

In the Duathlon, comprised of a 1.5-mile run, followed by a 10-mile bike and another 3-mile run, Joe Ricci of Bensalem, Pa., finished first overall with a time of 57:34, while Sayreville’s Marco Cardoso took second in 59:13, and Clementon’s Stephen Smith finished third at 1:00:06. The fourth and fifth overall finishers were Tim Hayburn of Ardmore, Pa., in 1:02:02 and Matt Hayes of Havertown, Pa., in 1:06:08. For the women, Margate’s Kim Keidat placed 13th overall in 1:17:02, while Amanda Kraft of Red Lion, Pa., was right behind her in 14th with a time of 1:19:11, and Green Brook’s Tammy Munsch was 23rd overall in 1:27.10.

In the Aquabike event – which includes a quarter-mile swim and 10-mile bike ride – Mickleton’s Joseph Ettorre grabbed the top spot in 36:32, while Lavallette’s Jean Verrier was second in 47:07, and Madison’s Jennifer Palombo was third in 48:05. Julianne Noonan of Boyertown, Pa., and Berkeley Heights’ Erin Tripp swiped fourth and fifth overall, with respective times of 48:40 and 49:57. —D.B.
