Stafford Township — Chipotle Mexican Grill has signed a lease to open on the site of the former Sonic Drive-In at 385 Martin Truex Jr. Blvd. next to the new Xfinity retail store off Route 72 in Manahawkin. Representatives said the timeline for opening is planned for sometime this winter.

Chipotle serves mainly tacos and Mexican style burritos, with vegetarian options. A new advertised offering is Carne Asada, tender, grilled, hand-cut steak.

The site is part of a redevelopment by Scarborough Properties that began in 2008 when Scarborough brought in BJ’s Wholesale Club, Chase Bank and Aldi there.

“The re-development of the former Sonic has been the culmination of years of hard work and market focus by Scarborough,” said Keith Seymour, a leasing agent with Equity Retail Brokers of Plymouth Meeting, Pa. Equity Retail Brokers represented Scarborough Properties in securing Chipotle.

“Recent traffic improvements to Route 72 have improved access and visibility to an already exceptional property,” Seymour added.

Equity Retail Brokers is now seeking tenants for the remaining 3,600 square feet of the retail complex. One or two other businesses could be located there, depending on their size needs.

In marketing the remaining space, the brokers note that with an average daily traffic count of 45,000 on Route 72, the location in the heart of the Manahawkin retail hub is “ideally positioned” on Route 72 between the Garden State Parkway and Route 9, Equity Retail Brokers said.

The Stafford Township site will be the third location in Ocean County, along with Toms River and Brick Township. Another is in Mays Landing. —M.S.
