Charging Forward

Oct 23, 2019

To the Editor:

Long Beach Island is a home to many and a vacation destination to thousands. This little barrier island experiences an influx of car traffic once Labor Day hits. It goes from a deserted island to a thriving summer destination. With the increase of tourists to LBI, there is also an increase in car pollution. We are already seeing the changes to our beaches with the effects of climate change, like rising sea levels and more severe storms.

Emissions from the transportation sector make up nearly half of New Jersey’s greenhouse gas pollution. To combat this, Manahawkin has been building charging stations for electric vehicles over the past year or so. The town has taken steps to help make owning an electric car easier, but this is not enough for Manahawkin alone.

Bill S-2252/A-4819 expands electric vehicle charging stations and increases rebates for buying an electric car, making plugging in easier. While Manahawkin has taken steps to help make having electric vehicles easier, the accessibility throughout New Jersey is not nearly as easy as it should be.

This is one of the biggest issues faced with owning an electric car, and why New Jersey needs to pass S-2252/A-4819 as soon as possible. Not only will this bill make charging stations accessible all across New Jersey, but it will help reduce car pollution, especially on LBI during tourist season.
