Ship Bottom, NJ — The turreted, over-head-high creation of Ian Deibert, a professional sandcastle builder from Northfield, might have taken center stage in a competition Saturday, Sept. 21, but there were other masterful and quirky works.

It was a perfect off-season day for the first-time “Castle Bash” Sandcastle Competition on the beach at sponsor Drifting Sands Oceanfront Hotel on Ninth Street in Ship Bottom. Contestants and beach loungers gave the area the feel of a summer day at the shore. In addition, decorative windsocks and kites including a “life-size” dragon added a festive element to the proceedings.

Sandcastle competition entries included “The Patch” by Brendan Schaffer of The Villas, a squirrel by Kathy Nichols of Beesley’s Point, and a medieval-type castle by Darrell O’Connor of Wilmington, Del.  —G.T.
