Cars Vandalized After Controversial Morrison’s Vote

Beach Haven — Beach Haven police are investigating the apparent vandalism of cars owned by Mayor Nancy Taggart Davis and former Councilman Donald Kakstis following a meeting in which officials approved a developer’s agreement with Christopher Vernon.

The developer is looking to build a 102-room hotel at the old site of Morrison’s Restaurant. The sometimes contentious Oct. 15 meeting, which lasted several hours, was held at Surflight Theatre to accommodate a large crowd that nearly filled up the facility. Taggart and Councilmen Charles Maschal and Tom Lynch voted in favor, while Dan Allen and Jaime Baumiller were against it.

Next on the agenda for Vernon will be a hearing before the land use board. He would also need Coastal Area Facilities Review Act approval.

Police Capt. Tom Medel said that sometime in overnight hours following the meeting, someone let the air out of the tires by loosening the valve stems. The cars were parked at their residences.

“The tires were not slashed,” he said. “But it’s a shame people have to resort to this because they have a disagreement.”

Medel said that anyone with information can contact Det. Tom Daly at 609-492-0505.  —E.E.
