Bonding Experience

Nov 13, 2019

To the Editor:

Reflections on the election: “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about” – Margaret Wheatley.

A group of Island parents and grandparents (and a “Choice” mom!) discovered what it cares about this spring. An LBI school board member summed us up this way, “It’s the same 15 parents who keep showing up at these meetings.” That was not meant to be complimentary. As it turns out, it was.

Thank you to this group that got involved, kept showing up, and changed the way our school system will be run. With no certainty, we stuck together, showed up and stood up for local education.

Most of these parents have children who would never be affected by consolidation, closing a school or the great majority of the issues being debated. Their kids are a couple of years away from leaving the school system. They showed up for babies, toddlers, kids not born yet and what they believe is the right path for education in the community they love.

We grew into a bonded group, forged friendships and connected in a way we never could have without this challenge. What an unexpected gift!
