Little Egg Harbor Township — An American Red Cross blood drive is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Little Egg Harbor branch of the Ocean County Library, located at 290 Mathistown Rd. Most healthy people who weigh at least 110 pounds and are 16 or older are eligible to donate. A photo ID is required; a parental consent form signed by a parent or guardian is required for 16-year-olds.

Call 800-RED-CROSS to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome.

Summer is usually a tough time for Red Cross blood drives. People are on vacation, dealing with heat waves, in no mood to donate blood. But blood, obviously, is needed year ’round. The Red Cross says there is a special need at this time for A+ donors.

The need for blood is especially apparent when there is a mass shooting. Sharita Henderson can testify to that.

On April 22, 2018, Henderson was at the Waffle House in Nashville for breakfast. A gunman walked in and opened fire, killing four patrons and injuring others, including Henderson. She caught two bullets in the arm and one in the leg and needed 10 surgeries and several blood transfusions in the next few months.

“Unfortunately,” says the Red Cross, “Sharita’s experience has become all too common. When any emergency patient arrives at a hospital in need of blood, hospitals rely on existing supply. That’s why it’s so very important to keep donating on a regular basis. You can never know when, where or how your generosity will be needed and appreciated.” —R.M.
