Beach Haven Terrace — What started as a simple summer block party turned into a high-energy fundraiser, with the drone shots to prove it, thanks to the neighbors of Beach Haven Terrace.

Summer resident Karen Pressler explained the block party is a long tradition going back to the ’80s, handed off to different organizers through the years, but it fell off in about 2006, so this year’s party was a revival.

The action took place on Bayview Avenue, between Delaware and Maryland avenues, but drew party guests from a wider radius. An estimated 200 people were there – all ages, year-’rounders and seasonal folks.

“A pack of about 30 kids have grown up together down here,” Pressler said.

A boy named Johnny Gallagher who lives in the Terrace has Type 1 diabetes, so they decided to add a fundraising element to the block party, as a benefit for the JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund). A different year, the group raised money to help another nearby young person who had been in a snowboarding accident.

When Bywatyr Shop owners Denise and Bob Burr heard about it, they donated a fancy “Beach Haven Terrace” sign that was signed by all the party goers and raffled off for $733. The money was donated directly in Gallagher’s name.

Holiday Snack Bar donated T-shirts and a sheet cake for the occasion, Pressler added.  —V.F.
