Big Badge Mistake

Jul 24, 2019

To the Editor:

As summer residents of Long Beach Township for over 35 years, we have been purchasing seasonal beach badges for our entire family. This year, having waited until the end of June and ready to walk to the beach with our family, we remembered that we didn’t purchase our usual eight badges. In our haste, I asked my son to use an online app I saw advertised.

Unfortunately, the app was for the purchase of Ship Bottom badges, not Long Beach Township. As soon as we realized our mistake we tried to cancel the order for over $300. The independent app would not accept a cancellation. We called the borough of Ship Bottom and were told “no cancellations for any reason.” We went and visited the Ship Bottom borough hall, where we were told to try to sell them on social media – no cancellations.

I understand that the town of Ship Bottom is trying to modernize its system and streamline the process of purchasing badges. And I understand that practically everything can be purchased online. But to not refund an error by a local resident? What can possibly be the reason for that?

Even Amazon allows a quick cancellation for purchases made in error. I’m sure there is a simple software solution to this problem that would also be a good public relations solution for the town.

Needless to say, we had to purchase eight more badges, from Long Beach Township. Anyone need Ship Bottom seasonal badges?
