For the first time, the Barnegat Township Police Department will have a contingent participating in the Police Unity Tour, running May 9-12.

The tour was organized in May 1997 by Officer Patrick P. Montuore of the Florham Park Police Department, with the hope of bringing public awareness of officers who died in the line of duty and to honor their sacrifice. What started with 18 riders on a four-day fundraising bicycle ride from Florham Park to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., has since grown into nine chapters. Nearly 2,500 members nationwide make the trip annually.

The ride raised $2.7 million for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Etched on the outdoor memorial are the names of 19,000 officers who died in the line of duty.

Barnegat Patrolman Chris Ebert said that in the past, Officer Vincent Damiano rode with members of the Stafford Township Police Department.

“Barnegat will be seven officers – five riders and two support people,” said Ebert. “They’re bicycling about 80 miles a day. So the support officers can provide them with food, water and whatever help they need.”

Damiano rode four times with Stafford.

“Every officer should do it at least once,” he said.“It's a great feeling when you ride through a small town and people applaud you. But then it gets pretty emotional when you get to the memorial, and see someone who lost a spouse, or children who lost a parent.”

A fundraiser is planned Sunday, March 24, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Doyle’s Pour House. Tickets are $30 per person and include beer, wine, soda and appetizers. In addition, commemorative T-shirts can be purchased for $20 each.
