Barnegat Paving Way for New Town Historian

By Eric Englund | Nov 06, 2019

Barnegat — The Barnegat Township Committee is looking to appoint a new town historian, a position that has not been filled since Mary Catherine Kennedy died nearly three years ago.

An ordinance authorizing the move was introduced Nov. 7.

Mayor Alfonso Cirulli said an ordinance was needed to clarify the duties of the historian, which is a volunteer position.

“This ordinance has not been changed in a while,” he said. “What we don’t want is for the historian to be tying up the office in town hall, where people have enough work to do. Mary Catherine didn’t do that, but if we don’t spell it out clearly in an ordinance, we might have a problem.”

Cirulli said he had received inquiries from some residents interested in the position.

“We’ll probably appoint the new historian early next year,” he said. “They’re certainly welcome to do research, look over documents, collect photos and memorabilia, or write books and do presentations. But we have to make sure it is separate from township business.”  —E.E
