Barnegat —

There has already been an outpouring of community support for the family of a Barnegat Township police officer who died suddenly Oct. 2. Ptl. Alex Hoffman had served with the department for nearly 17 years when the 40-year-old was stricken working off-duty at a Lakewood site with his company, AJK Excavators. He was pronounced dead at Ocean Medical Center in Brick Township.

“He died doing what he always did – working hard to provide for his wife and two children,” said the police department in announcing his passing on its Facebook page. “He was always here to serve the Barnegat community however he could. During Superstorm Sandy in 2012, Alex donated his personally owned 2.5-ton truck to be used by the agency. That truck was used to conduct high-water rescues at the peak of the storm, saving lives.”

The department said Hoffman also dedicated his time to obtaining surplus equipment for the agency,  procuring over $500,000 worth of high-water rescue and off-road vehicles free of charge.

He was a life member of the Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire Co. and a past member of the Barnegat Volunteer Fire Co. A younger brother, Justin Hoffman, is a patrolman for the Long Beach Township Police Department.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, Susie’s Hair Salon, located in Barnegat at 21 South Main St. (Route 9), Unit 2, will be holding a benefit cut-athon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is offering all wash and cuts during that time for $20, with all proceeds going to Hoffman’s family.

“Alex was related to one of my employees,” said salon owner Susanna Fiorentino. “Sometimes when I’d be working here later at night, he’d stop by to check that everything was OK.”

In addition, a fund drive has been launched by Troopers United Foundation ( TUF was formed in 2016 by dedicated New Jersey state troopers to be of assistance to any and all troopers, police officers, first responders and their families in the event of tragedy or illness.

The foundation is working in conjunction with Barnegat PBA 296, which is planning a fundraiser next month. Ptl. Chris Ebert, the PBA’s state delegate, said the event will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, from noon to 7 p.m. at the Barnegat Firehouse on Birdsall Street. Admission will be $25. Some details still have to be ironed out, and information will be available on the PBA’s Facebook Page.

“Alex was a great asset to the department,” said Deputy Mayor John Novak, the township committee’s police department liaison. He was the kind of person who went out of his way to help people when needed. He was well-respected and well-liked. I think a lot of people are going to go to bat for his family.”

Funeral services were held at Riggs Funeral Home in Forked River. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Popcorn Park Zoo, P.O. Box 43, Forked River, N.J. 08731 in his memory. —E.E.
