Barnegat Concession Stand Named for Germanos

Barnegat — Last year, a full-fledged concession stand opened at the Barnegat High School football field. As of June 3, the facility was given a name: “The Germano Family Concession Stand.”

The stand features a plaque that reads: “The Germano family has been a staple in our schools and town for generations. Serving on the school Board of Education and as employees in our district, the Germanos are generous, caring, and invested in the overall success of the students and families within our Barnegat family.”

“I am floored,” said John Germano, who has been Barnegat High School’s athletic director since 2005. “It’s hard for me to say how appreciative I am to get this honor and recognition.”

Scott Sarno, board of education president, said, “We wanted to wait on holding a dedication ceremony to allow them time to get settled. John and his family are certainly very deserving of this honor.”

Prior to coming to the high school, Germano was athletic director for the Russell O. Brackman Middle School. His late mother, Sally Germano, formerly served on the board of education.

“My mother started the high school booster club and worked tirelessly to one day get this concession stand established,” he said. “When we started out, all we had was bottled water and a grill.”

His father, the late Joseph Germano, volunteered in the district, he said. “With the American Legion color guard, he helped connect the students with veterans. Now we have our own color guard with the Junior ROTC program.”

He said his wife, Kimberly Germano, is a guidance counselor at the Robert L. Horbelt Elementary School. “But she was volunteering at all our home football games, whether it was working the grill or the ticket booth.”

Don’t be surprised if another generation of the family makes its mark. John’s son Logan was a member of the varsity boys swimming team, which won the school’s first sectional title this spring. —E.E.
