At times during its match against Toms River East on April 12, the Barnegat High School boys volleyball team scored points easily, but not every point was pretty. Still, the Bengals managed a 25-14, 25-23 victory to win their fifth straight contest after starting the season 0-2.

Aaron Osborn delivered six kills and an ace to lead the Bengals (5-2), while Bobby Perrini gave out 11 assists, and Shane Savastano contributed four kills and a block. Marcus Sadsad recorded eight digs and an ace along the way as well.

After going 1-2 during the first week of the season – the first win of the season occurring April 5 against Lacey – Barnegat had a phenomenal four-match stretch last week, beginning with a 25-5, 25-19 drubbing of Long Branch on April 8, before winning a 25-17, 23-25, 25-18 decision over Keyport the next day, and on April 11 knocking off Pleasantville, 25-19, 25-21.

Against Pleasantville, Perrini dished out 25 assists, while Osborn hammered down seven kills and mustered four digs and an ace, and Parth Patel whacked seven kills and delivered four aces. Kenneth Franke was a rock at the net, registering eight blocks, while Sadsad managed eight digs. Savastano also added six kills.

During the win over Keyport, the Bengals were led by Osborn’s 16 kills, three aces and three digs, while Savastano added 14 kills and four blocks, Patel dropped 11 kills and picked up five digs, Perrini handed out 24 assists and Sadsad had 18 digs.

Pinelands Girls Lacrosse

Grabs First Win

After not winning a game during the past two seasons, and starting off 0-3 to start this spring, the Pinelands Regional girls lacrosse team finally found the winning formula against Point Pleasant Beach on April 12, scoring a 13-9 victory. Pinelands led 7-3 at halftime.

The Wildcats (1-3) were led by Karianna Eagle, who scored five times, while Jamilyn Hawkins delivered three goals and picked up five groundballs. Paula Handel, Skylar Callahan, Karli Pomponio, Kayla Carson and Erin Pomponio each scored once to lift Pinelands. Goaltender Quinn Moore made 10 saves to keep the Wildcats in front.

During their three previous losses to powerful Toms River North, Brick and a very good Trinity Hall crew, Pinelands had scored a total of seven goals.

Southern Golfers Second in OCT;

Pinelands Fourth

While Toms River North’s Connor Bekefi easily won the Ocean County Tournament and led the Mariners to the team title on April 15, the Southern Regional and Pinelands Regional boys golf teams put in solid efforts, finishing second and fourth, respectively.

Leading the Rams to a 354 team score, Lasse Lehman tied for fifth with Pinelands’ Connor Carney, both carding an 18-hole tally of 85, while Jeff Reilly shot an 86 to tie for sixth, Peter Fabian recorded a 91 and Jon Sheehan managed a 92. Austin Carney led the Wildcats (370) with an 84, good enough for third place behind Toms River North’s Leo Kean, who scored 79.

Southern Sailors

Swipe Seventh

Amid heavy fog, light winds and choppy water, the Southern Regional sailing team placed seventh of 18 squads at the Middle Atlantic Championship regatta in Annapolis, Md., on April 13, faring well against some of the best teams from Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and New York.

With skipper Brielle Willoughby and crew Bridget Green and Nate Ertle on board in the A Division, the trio kept the Rams in position to finish in the upper half of the standings, but it was the B Division duo of Tommy Green and Joe Mraczek which delivered a big finish in the last set of races to send Southern past Norfolk Collegiate and into seventh place.

Christchurch (Virginia), the Ranney School in Monmouth County, and Severn (Maryland) finished first, second and third in the standings to qualify for the national championship regatta in Seattle.  —D.B.
