Beach Haven — Walking into the Beach Haven Barber Shop can make you feel you’re in an era a few decades back. No fancy styling or weaving, just your basic shave and a haircut. Carmine DiGiaimo, who owns the Surf City Barber Shop, recently opened the Beach Haven shop at 500 North Bay Ave., Suite 4. He splits his time between the two establishments.

“Business has been pretty good, but I’m sure it will get a lot busier after the Memorial Day weekend,” he said. “It will be easy for people to find since we got an old-fashioned barber pole outside.”

He said his shop offers a variety of cuts and styles, along with a hot towel shave.

A graduate of the Capri Institute Cosmetology Training Center in Brick Township, DiGiaimo has had more than 15 years experience in haircutting.

Since Superstorm Sandy, DiGiaimo said, his shop is the only one of its kind on the Island. Mario’s Barber Shop, which was located in the Haven Beach section of Long Beach Township, suffered substantial damage during the storm and moved to Manahawkin.

DiGiaimo worked at the Surf City shop for a year before becoming its owner in 2012.

“That’s been there since the 1950s,” he said. “We were fortunate in that the shop wasn’t damaged during Sandy, but we had to close for a while before people were getting let back onto the Island.”

Beach Haven Barber Shop hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 8 to 4 on Saturday. It is closed Sunday.
