Barnegat Leader Spring Sports Previews

Balanced Group of Barnegat Golfers Take Shot at Division

Apr 19, 2019

Following a 10-6 campaign last spring, the Barnegat High School boys golf team brought back a strong lineup to the links for this season. In fact, it’s one of the Bengals most experienced teams in years.

“All our guys can shoot nice scores, so we should be very competitive,” said coach Rick Blasi as the season got underway with a 165-184 loss to a solid Jackson Memorial bunch on April 2. “We have a lot of experienced players on our varsity team, and we’re hoping to have a strong performance in the Ocean County Tournament as well as qualify a few players for the Shore Conference Tournament.”

With the OCT earlier this week, the Bengals placed 10th with a team score of 405, getting one tourney out of the way. But Barnegat has a lot more season ahead and Blasi’s bunch may challenge Pinelands for the top spot in the Shore Conference Class B South division this spring.

Matt Kulpa, Kyle Smith, Nick Spitz and Owen McAvoy are the seniors leading the way, but the Bengals also have a pair of solid golfers who add some depth to the lineup in junior Peter Toth and Grady Edwards. Senior James Davenport is the newcomer to the group.

Following the opening loss to Jackson Memorial, the Bengals won five straight going into the OCT, with 201-220 and 201-226 wins over Central and B South foe Manchester on April 3, followed by 181-209 and 181-196 victories over Brick and Central, and a 200-206 triumph against division rival Donovan Catholic.

In their most recent victory, the Bengals were led by Smith with a 46, followed by 50s from Toth and Edwards, and a 51 from Spitz. Against Central and Brick on April 10, Toth, Edwards and Spitz each carded a 45, while Kulpa delivered a 46.

As for the girls, Sue Rogers’ crew was in decent shape heading into the season.

“Our outlook is good because we have a few experienced players,” she said. “The team has worked hard on their long-ball hitting and putting.”

Leading the Bengals this season are juniors Jasmine Reid and Madison Linton – both of whom recently fared well enough in the Ocean County Tournament to qualify for the conference tourney, which was played earlier this week. Juniors Makayla Adams and Kiersten Glonek, as well as freshmen Kira Pokluda, Olivia Maschi, Maya Faulds and Maura Glines add depth to the Barnegat lineup.

Barnegat so far has scored a quartet of victories, including three big ones in one day (April 2) against Southern (125-132), Toms River East (125-137) and Toms River North (125-136). During the shortened contest, Reid and Maschi each fired a 30, while Glonek carded a 32 and Pokluda returned to the clubhouse with a 33.

Against Southern on April 5, the Bengals scored a 232-237 victory, as Reid led the way with a 51, Pokluda recorded a 59, and Maschi and Glonek each finished with a 61.
