Beach Haven, NJ — After working the past three years as a seller of home-baked goods to area establishments, Melissa Ludwig recently opened her own place. The Goodness Café by Sweet Melissa is located in Beach Haven at 1102 North Bay Ave.

A retired science and language arts teacher from the Lumberton School District, Ludwig was known for her gourmet pop tarts, cookie sandwiches, blondies, mini-layer cakes, macarons and much more, at several coffee shops and markets on Long Beach Island.

“I have been passionate about baking for a long time,” she said. “It is not only because it is a perfect blend of science and art, but also because it evokes a sense of nostalgia from my youth. I’m a self-taught baker. From a very early age, I remember watching my grandmother and mother at work in the kitchen, making the delicious recipes I use today.”

Aside from the aforementioned delectibles, café customers can also enjoy varieties of gourmet coffee and specialty teas.

“I think the pop tarts are the most popular item,” said Ludwig. “I have strawberry, nutella, cinnamon/brown sugar and peach crust among others. We have savory breakfast items to start your day as well as light lunch fare you can take to the beach.”

In addition to the selections at the café, Ludwig is available to create a variety of decorated cookies, customized cakes and dessert trays for weddings and parties of all occasions.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. For more information visit sweetmelissagoodness.com. —E.E.
