Averting Gridlock

Jul 10, 2019

To the Editor:

The tragic early morning accident in Ship Bottom on Saturday, June 22 caused gridlock for those wanting to get on and off LBI.

I understand the closing of nearby roads is necessary for the investigation, but it caused gridlock for traffic approaching the traffic circle area at Eighth and Ninth streets due to the Saturday morning volume and the uncoordinated traffic lights. Why were there no policemen at the critical intersections directing traffic?

I tried to leave the Island using Barnegat Avenue, but it was at a standstill forever. I eventually returned home and missed my appointment.

The blocked intersections could have been alleviated by a policeman directing traffic. Not enough manpower in the Ship Bottom Police Department is probably the excuse, but why not call in other municipalities’ support for such situations?

The residents/taxpayers of Long Beach Island and visitors deserve better support from our police departments.
