Annual Trunk or Treat a Sign Fall Arrived on LBI

Surf City — While the weather remains in summer mode, the fall season has arrived on the calendar and in the hottest spot for Halloween in all of Southern Ocean County: Surf City. For the fifth consecutive year, the Surf City Police Department and the Surf City Volunteer Fire Co. and EMS are hosting Trunk or Treat.

Last year’s event drew an estimated 700 children and their families. Trunk or Treat was conceived because many homes on Long Beach Island are emptied and winterized in the offseason, leaving local children with few places to go and show off their costumes – not to mention be rewarded for their costume creativity with candy. It’s a safe and fun-filled alternative to traditional trick-or-treating, providing a designated place for young children and their parents to celebrate the fall season’s one festival for children.

This year’s event will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of the Surf City Firehouse on the Boulevard in the borough. A rain date of Sunday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m., has been set if needed.

What is needed is sponsorship as the event is funded entirely by local businesses, community groups and service agencies that serve the Long Beach Island area. The monies will help cover the cost of treats, entertainment and more in order to make this event free to the community. All sponsorships and donations must be received by Friday, Oct. 11, to be listed on the event banner. All donations are to be made to the Surf City Volunteer Fire Co., federal ID #22-2319249. If writing a check, mark the note section with “For Trunk or Treat.”

A few things to remember: Vehicle registration for the “trunk” part of trunk or treat is on a first-come basis. Parking is at a premium, and each participating vehicle will be assigned a space number once it’s been accepted. All vehicles must be registered prior to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. Only pre-registered vehicles will be permitted to participate in the event.

For safety reasons, all participating vehicles must remain parked for the full length of the event. All cars must be in place no later than 5:30 p.m. the day of the event. Decorating begins two hours prior to the start of the event, unless otherwise discussed and approved by event coordinators. All decorating must be completed no later than 5:45 p.m.

Each vehicle will receive, at the minimum, two large bags of candy to hand out during the event. Any candy, other snacks or beverages brought into the event must be approved by either Roe or Collins prior to the start of the event.

No scary, bloody or gruesome decorations will be permitted. This is a family affair, and family-friendly costumes should be the norm. Also not allowed are masks that cover the entire face.

Sponsors are permitted to have a banner for their business at their trunk station. Battery-operated lights are suggested for the event as it does take place around dusk, when the sun has set or is beginning to set on LBI. Promotional items may be handed out, in addition to candy, but must be appropriate for children. Think Frisbees, balls, water bottles, pencils, stickers. All promotional items must be approved by Roe or Collins prior to the event.

Lastly, participants must ensure the area around their trunk station is clean of all debris and garbage prior to leaving the parking lot after the event has ended.
