The new president of the Barnegat First Aid Squad has a very familiar name – Trish Shaffery. Her family has a long-standing tradition in the squad. Her father, Walter, and mother, Georgia, are longtime members of the squad and auxiliary, respectively. Two brothers, Robert and Chris, are paid EMTs who have also served on the squad.

“My youngest son (Jordan) and I joined together and ride hundreds of hours together, and shortly after my nephew (Matthew) also joined,” she said. “They both are dedicated members, especially being so young. They do a lot for the squad.”

In addition, her brother Patrick Shaffery is a retired Barnegat police lieutenant.

As president, Shaffery said she will be stepping up on recruiting for members in the spring. People can join as a cadet member at age 16, but are subject to restrictions such as not being able to be on duty after 9 p.m. At 18 one can be a full-fledged member. The current roster is at approximately 40.

Under an agreement with the township, Quality Medical Transport provides ambulance service from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, and the Barnegat EMS takes over from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and around-the-clock on weekends.

Shaffery said that in April, she and other squad members will participate in health classes at Barnegat High School in an effort to spark interest in students joining.

“We can always use more volunteers,” she said. “It’s important for us to reach out to the young people because they are our future.”

People interested in joining can stop by the squad headquarters at 6 Birdsall St. or call 609-698-7868. —E.E.
