WINNING EVENT: Hats, juleps and a Southern buffet layout marked the start of the 24th annual Hunger Relief Dinner & Auction on May 1 by the Hunger Foundation of Southern Ocean.

Foundation Board President Dan Taylor estimated that when accounting is done, proceeds of the night will total about $100,000 to be distributed among area food banks. Calling the event, held at The Mainland Holiday Inn, “a great night for our community,” Taylor said, “The dinner was a success thanks to the local chefs who donated their time and talents, the fantastic room decorating by the Reynolds family, our committee members, the Mainland and, most importantly, those attending, who were so generous in their giving.”

The clever menu stood out with “Party Paddock Tailgate Stations” during an open bar, followed by Derby Dinner entrees and a Finish Line dessert table. Southern preparations such as filet mignon with onion marmalade, smoked brisket baked beans, bourbon sauces, and pimento cheese grits and shrimp with smoked Andouille chili glaze were a few favorites.
