‘Messiah’ Sing at Holy Innocents’ Church Dec. 8

Nov 27, 2019

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in Beach Haven holds its annual Handel’s “Messiah” sing on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 4 p.m. Ellen Dondero, minister of music, said the event is held in partnership with the New Jersey Chamber Singers, who will feature soloists. The program covers the Christmas portion of the oratorio as well as the “Hallelujah Chorus.”

“If you are a singer, you are invited to bring a ‘Messiah’ score and sing along with the chorus on this familiar work,” said Dondero. “Additional scores will be available. If you would rather just listen, join us in the special seating for audience members who choose not to sing.”

Dondero said in addition, the chamber singers will perform selections featuring holiday favorites.

Under the direction of Matthew Zabiegala, the Jersey Shore’s premier chamber music choral group was founded in 1978 for the sole purpose of providing quality performances of choral music for the small ensemble. In addition to seasonal concerts at the shore, the group has performed at the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division Convention in Maryland and Pennsylvania, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. (by invitation of the bishop), the Academy of Music in Philadelphia and Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City.

The church plans a service of lessons and carols on Friday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. The service features traditional Christmas readings and carol singing, which will include congregational singing as well as traditional and contemporary choral music by the choir of Holy Innocents’.

A reception follows both events. For more information, call the church at 609-492-7571. E.E.
