Barnegat — Barnegat Township officially gets into the holiday spirit on Saturday, Dec. 7, when the recreation department holds a breakfast with Santa Claus at 9 a.m. in the community recreation center. Recreation Director Jean Broadbent said tickets are $10 (children younger than 2 are admitted free). Reservations must be made in advance. People can bring their own cameras to take photos, and each child who meets Santa receives a free gift.

The breakfast menu, catered by Sweet Jenny’s, includes French toast, western omelets, bacon, muffins, fruit, toast and coffee.

Also on that day, at 11 a.m., the Rotary Club is planning a 3-mile run to benefit its gift buying program. Cost is $25 per person. The run takes place on the Rail Trail and begins at the Little League complex and ends at the Breakers Restaurant in Waretown, where runners get a free lunch.

At dusk, Santa returns when the fire company transports him and Mrs. Claus to light the municipal complex at 5:30 p.m. They will also light up the downtown gazebo park before stopping by the firehouse on Birdsall Street at approximately 6:30 to greet small children and pose for photos. Admission is free. Hot chocolate and Christmas-style cookies will be served.

The evening before, the township committee will light a donated tree at the Fred Watts Gazebo Park at 5:30.

“The park will be decorated with help of the Barnegat Garden Club, local businesses and volunteers,” said Committeeman Albert Bille. “Where possible, lluminated decorations will be installed on the poles along Route 9. A ceremony to celebrate Hanukkah, lighting of the menorah, will be held there also on Dec. 22 at 4 p.m.”

New to the celebrations is a holiday party with the snowman on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the recreation center from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is $6 person. The special guest is Freckles the Clown. Ice cream and cakes will be served.

For those who cannot make that event, another party with the snowman is planned on Friday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Waretown Volunteer Fire Co. on Wells Mills Road (Route 532).

On Monday, Dec. 9, the Barnegat Volunteer Fire Co. will begin its “Santa runs,” when St. Nick will be transported through various neighborhoods.

For a breakfast reservation, call the recreation department at 609-698-0080, extension 122. For a schedule on the Santa runs,  call the fire company’s non-emergency line, 609-698-6766, or log onto —E.E.
