Anyone in the Market for a Private Island?

Beach Haven — As a veteran Realtor, John A. Moore IV of the Weichert Realtors Asbury Group in Ocean City has sold his share of waterfront properties.

But he calls his latest listing quite unique: a privately owned island in the bay off Second Street in Beach Haven. Its address is 4 Little Lower Island. The 5.58-acre property, featuring a 2,900-square-foot home, is currently for sale at $1,999,900.

“This is one of two private islands in the entire state of New Jersey, the other being in Lavallette,” Moore said. Electric, cable and public water and sewer all run to the island.

The property was previously owned by local builder Mark Davies, who, Moore said, did many renovations in 2007 and throughout his ownership. Moore declined to name the owner or the bank that acquired the property.

“When the bank began to access to the property there were only minor cosmetic repairs that were needed, which the bank took care of around Christmas of 2018,” he said. “We are very appreciative of the way the previous owners kept the property.”

Repairs included new paint throughout, new bathroom vanities, new light fixtures, powerwashing of the exterior and other minor touchups.

“Some of my favorite features are the gorgeous kitchen with upgraded cabinetry, granite counter and stainless steel appliances,” he said. “The large amount of windows provide great natural lighting and water views from almost every inch of the interior and 2,200 square feet of decking including a rooftop deck have panoramic views as far as the eye can see.”

Mayor Nancy Taggart Davis recalled boating in the area in the late 1960s and seeing a small structure on the island.

“It was like shack house,” she said. “Over the years a lot of improvements were made to the property. I remember the Mordecai Land Trust once used it for their house tour. It wasn’t inhabited often. There’d be people on weekends during the summer, but that was about it.”  —E.E.
