Rams Stickmen Hope to Keep A-South Title Streak Intact

Apr 12, 2019

The Southern Regional High School boys varsity lacrosse team has been making a habit of winning A-South championships, as the Rams captured the crown again last year for the seventh straight time. Overall, the team posted a 14-4 mark, but were 7-0 in the A-South.

“We believe we belong ranked in the top five in the Shore Conference,” said head coach John Pampalone. “Our seven consecutive division titles and final four and/or finals apperances in the Shore Conference tourney have established our program as one of the best in the conference since 2013.”

This season, the Rams have split their first four games, with victories against Toms River East and Toms River South by respective 13-0 and 19-3 scores. They lost 6-5 to Freehold Township and 18-2 against Manasquan.

In his 12th year at the helm, Pampalone sports a career 156-48 mark. He said the top returning attackmen are seniors Aniello Russo and Nick Stankus and junior Cade Johnson. Leading the midfielders will be senior Ajani Steverson and juniors Ben Loparo and Jake Hughes. Top returning defensemen include seniors Ian Maul, Vinnie Deck and Eric Hahn, juniors Will Devae and Moah Wasacz, and sophomore JT Hille.

The starting goalie is senior Luke Maul.

Pampalone said key newcomers include junior midfielder Aaron Hutchinson, sophomore face-off Drew Wasacz, sophomore midfilder Luke Bruther, sophomore defenseman/midfielder Frank Fierra, freshmen midfielders Ryan Siniksi and Brock Lefkus and freshman defenseman Nate Committee.

Pampalone said goalie and defense are the strengths, while a weakness would be inexperience at face-off.

Upcoming games include a visit to Toms River South on Tuesday, April 16, 4 p.m. and a home game against Hightstown on Thursday, April 18, 4 p.m.  —E.E.
